As loving pet parents, it’s easy to spoil our pets with toys and treats. Unfortunately, all it takes is one too many snacks to gain excess weight, which can lead to many health problems. In the same way, some pets may be underweight due to several factors (e.g. underlying health conditions, not getting enough nutrients in their diet). The good news is that our team can help your pet reach their ideal weight in a safe manner. Call us today at 250-248-0008 to learn more about our weight management services.
How do I know if my pet is overweight?
Due to the variety of species and breeds, it is quite difficult to establish a healthy weight range for pets. Bringing them in for an in-clinic consultation with the vet is the best way to know. That being said, there are some general characteristics you can watch out for. Your pet’s waist should be slightly tapered in with a clear distinction from their hips. Their belly should not be hanging out. Lastly, you should be able to feel the bottom rows of their ribs with little to no fat.
What can I do to help my pet lose or gain weight?
The first step is to bring them in for an in-person checkup at our practice. Then, we will be able to diagnose the root cause of their weight issues. Getting pets to a healthier weight is more nuanced than simply “eating less and exercising more.” Depending on your pet’s unique case, the doctor may recommend one or a combination of the following:
- Switching to different pet food (there are medicated formulas available)
- Change in feeding style and schedule
- Different types of exercise
- Treatments specific to the undiagnosed condition causing their weight loss/gain
